Advanced Composite Repairs
Detailed Overview

Below is the Advanced Composite Repairs overview detailing the learning outcomes for course.

During this 5 day hands-on course you will:

Theory for The Advanced Composite Repairs Course

  • Learn advanced aircraft composite structure design from a "built to repair" mindset

    • Introduction to "built to be repaired".

    • Understand the advanced composite materials used for construction as it relates to advanced composite repair

    • Introduction to "load transfer" theory as it relates to advanced composite repair including laminates and cores

  • Understanding advanced composites repair materials

    • Understanding aircraft manual required replacements materials for repairs

    • Understand "prepregs" and advanced matrix (resin) systems

    • Learn handling and repair layout techniques for prepreg materials

    • Learn storage requirements for prepregs and advanced matrices (resin systems)

    • Understand sandwich laminate core materials

  • Learn advanced composite structures inspection techniques

    • Understand various methods of NDT on advanced composite parts and when they are required.

    • Learn to perform a "tap test" on metallic sandwich and carbon sandwich structures

  • Learn to design an advanced composite structural repair that meets aircraft manual requirements.

    • Learn to interpret aircraft drawings for advanced composite "stack ups"

    • Learn to apply aircraft repair specifications into composite structural repairs

    • Learn to "layout" repair designs

  • Learn damage removal techniques

    • Understanding how to select the correct tooling for the structural damage

    • Learn core removal techniques

    • Learn how to "step sand" laminates

    • Understand how to "taper sand" laminates

  • Learn about the tooling required for advanced composite repairs

    • Introduction to core removal, grinding and sanding tools used for repair of advanced composites structures

    • Introduction to dust management equipment and techniques for the shop and on the aircraft

    • Understand what PPE - Personal Protective Equipment is, when & how to use it

    • Understand and apply safe work procedures with composites

  • Learn the importance of environmental conditions in shop, and on aircraft

    • Understand "dirty room" considerations in relation to completion of repair

    • Learn to manage a "clean room" environment including temperature and humidity

    • Understand how to manage repairs in challenging environmental conditions in an open hanger on aircraft

    • Understanding the challenges that temperature and humidity bring to advanced composite repairs

Practical Projects for Advanced Composite Repairs

  • Complete a hands-on project that locks in the technical knowledge learned during course using carbon fiber, nomex honeycomb core, foaming adhesive and film adhesive

  • Create a vacuum bag system designed for an elevated cure with complex contours.

  • Complete  repair on your project

    • Damage project

    • Inspect damage area and determine damage removal process

    • Remove damage

    • Design a repair that meets repair requirement

    • repair project

    • Final inspection

Upon Completion will have

  • Learned through an open and fun learning environment

  • A beginners understanding of the theory behind repairing advanced composite structures

  • Acquired an entry level, hands-on, skill set to begin repairing advanced composite structures

  • Have the required understanding and skills to move to the next step and further courses

  • Certificate of completion

Basic safety equipment will be supplied such as: dust mask, safety glasses, disposable gloves.

You must bring disposable painters coveralls/apron (chemical resistant) and "fit tested" personal respirator.
